| | | | Third Haven Meeting House | 1681 | Talbot County, MD | The history of Quakerism in Talbot County goes back as far as the earliest regular settlements of the area in 1658 and 1659. By the early 1660s, at least four Friends meetings were in existence: Bayside, along the Chesapeake Bay; Choptank and Tuckahoe, along the rivers of the same name; and Michael's River, along what is now known as the Miles River. The latter of these corresponds to the first meeting of Maryland, which was birthed from a visit to Talbot County by George Fox, and was also the first to move from the home of one of the Friends (Wenlock Christison) into an actual meeting house, named Betty's Cove, which was constructed at an indeterminate date. As the Quaker population of Talbot County continued to grow, further meeting houses were constructed to house the other three meetings. [More] | | |
| | | | Saint Mary Catholic Church | 1889 | Guthrie, OK | St. Mary Catholic Church began shortly after the land run on April 22, 1889 with the first Mass offered by Fr. Felix deGrassse, O.S.B. Fr. Felix built our first church which he dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary on the feast of her Nativity, September 8, 1889.
St. Mary was destined to become the First Cathedral (1891-1905) of the Vicariate Apostolic with the arrival of Bishop Theopile Meerschart on September 18, 1891. Bishop Meerschart was welcomed by many people from the community including Governor Steel, Mayor Spengler and a musical band. His festive arrival began with a parade starting at the Santa Fe Depot then to the Opera House for a public reception and finally to St. Mary Church for the installation of the Bishop and his clergy. Two days later Bishop Meerschart celebrated his first pontifical Mass in St. Mary Church.
The year 1892 held firsts not only for St. Mary’s Church but also for the Oklahoma Territory. On March 13, 1892 William Henry Ketcham was the first man to be elevated to the priesthood. Fr. Ketcham is well noted for his work with the Indians. Also on May 3, 1892 M. Genevieve Smith was the first woman in the territory to take her religious profession in the Order of Saint Benedict.
In the early 1900’s the Old Cathedral once located on the site of the current rectory. was razed to provide a lawn in front of the previous rectory. Our present church was constructed under the pastorate of Fr. John Van Castel, and was dedicated on December 27, 1921. The style is predominately Gothic with the rounded arches adding a Romanesque influence, the lead stained-glass windows were hand painted by the Munich Studio out of Chicago, Illinois in 1920. The larger windows of the side walls depict the joyful and glorious mysteries of the Rosary.
The parishioners at St. Mary have remained committed to our community and our faith. We are actively involved in our community, while at the same time maintaining Guthrie’s rich Catholic heritage. A strong sense of belonging and family are among the chief characteristics of parishioners who come from all over Logan County to worship. [More] | | |

| | | | Our Lady of Victory | McCain Co | | Our Lady Of Victory Church Purcell, Oklahoma Father Roquier, a French Canadian priest, built the first church in 1886, which was used as a school during the week. In 1887 the Benedictines became responsible for the church in Purcell. Father Vincent Joly was the first priest of the Benedictine Order from France. Father Joly with Father Ospital were involved in the building of a new church in 1891. By February 1888 the Franciscan Sisters of Glenn Riddle, PA arrived to begin a convent and boarding school which was closed in 1948 due to a lack of funds. The school, St. Elizabeth’s, was originally for the Indians but later accepted all children. In the early 1900’s St. Elizabeth’s third floor was destroyed by a fire but the townspeople rallied and rebuilt the convent and a new wing within two weeks. These early priests, along with the Fathers Wilwerding and Hugo, were an integral part of the community and were loved and respected by Catholics and non-Catholics. [More] | | |

| | | | Old Trinity Church | 1675 | Church Creek, MD | The exact origins of Church Creek remain unclear. Popular tradition maintains that Church Creek predates Cambridge, Maryland as the earliest settlement in Dorchester County, and was first established at some point before 1684 under the name Dorchester Town and then White Haven.[7] However the accuracy of this claim has been disputed by historian Elias Jones, who found no indication of land sales in the area before 1700 in County Land Records.[8] Both the town and river of Church Creek derive their name from the nearby Episcopal church, now known as Old Trinity Church, built c. 1675.[9][10] In 1867, Church Creek officially became the forty-second Incorporated town in Maryland, and remains one of the one-hundred and twenty-three such towns today. In 1975, the town adopted its first municipal tax in order to qualify for state tax grants and federal revenue-sharing. [More] | | |
